We left May 31 with a freshly cleaned white board. We're on our way home, 27 days later, with a board full of memories.
Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands National Monument, Lake Powell, Glen Canyon Dam, Horseshoe Bend, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Badlands, Devil's Tower National Monument, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and lots of boondocking at National Forest in between.
27 days. Dodging potential tornadoes in New Mexico, sledding down the gypsum dunes on a day so windy that my little one almost got swept away when he held the sled over his head, playing in the snow at 10k feet above sea level on Beartooth Pass, seeing a really cool gunfight reenactment with Buffalo Bill, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in Cody, getting caught in one hell of a storm on a trail in the Tetons (and probably almost getting eaten by bears a few times), and just taking in the beauty that our National Parks and Forests have to offer.
This is why I get so pissed off when I see people blatantly disregarding signs to stay away from the wildlife, straying off clearly marked paths, touching cavern walls even when the signs and rangers explicitly say not to, letting their children play in the geyser runoff, and trash. So much trash. My youngest picked up the trash he saw at a few different places. Declaring "Not on my watch!" He's seven. He'd make an excellent Park Ranger.
Take care of our National Treasures now so that people, years from now, can see them for the first time and experience the same sense of wonder and overwhelming emotion.
