Progress. ♥️ Someone called this ‘scorpion dog’ recently and I’m going with it! I posted a similar progress video a while back, but every day is different - so why not re-visit it? I remember having a distinct desire to get my foot to my head in this shape, and being frustrated with my inability to do so. I was able to do other poses with a foot to head connection - why was this so difficult? .

There are a few reasons that this pose is particularly challenging in its deepest expression. One is that you get no assist from gravity. The arms don’t really help as leverage here. It’s one massive hamstring contraction and a whole lot of lifting, opening, softening and breathing at the same time.
Most of my progress comes from a better understanding of breath and softening, not as much from gaining flexibility or strength (there’s probably some that, too, but not a huge difference). I was on my fingertips in the first version to create more lift and get my head closer to my foot. In today’s version, my hands are flat. I’m pushing more through my bottom foot to drive my chest further forward and up in today’s version. What isn’t visible here is the softening with breath. With each exhale, I find a little more depth. The exhale allows my body to soften (relax) as I move deeper into the pose. I’m meeting in the middle - foot to head, head to foot. This helps a lot with the connection as well.
Does it matter if your foot touches your head? No! Not remotely. It’s far less about the connection than it is about moving with calm and control, avoiding the struggle and staying with your breath. ♥️ .
