About basic needs: I came across an article about Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs and I was struck with a realization. This is a theory in psychology about which needs motivate the behavior of each of us human beings. Maslow distinguishes between so called deficiency needs and growth needs. Deficiency needs are the ones which motivate people when they are unmet: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem. While interestingly growth needs only increase once they are addressed. So, what are these growth needs? In his extended eight-stage model Maslow identified them as: cognitive needs- knowledge, curiosity; aesthetic needs- beauty, balance; self-actualization needs- realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences; transcendence needs- mystical experiences, service to others, science, religious faith. However, self-actualization is the most discussed aspect of the growth needs. Every person is capable and is longing for self-actualization, which is nothing less than a tendency to become actualized in what a person is potentially. Self-fulfillment, in other words. To do all you are capable of.
I could go on with more details, but instead I invite you to read the full article yourself.🤓 Just one final consideration: doesn’t is all about the growth needs sound like yoga in its original meaning? Perhaps we all need more yoga in our life😉
