: I introduced my wife to #Mandy
over the weekend!
Synopsis: The enchanted lives of a couple in a secluded forest are brutally shattered by a nightmarish hippie cult and their demon-biker henchmen, propelling a man into a spiraling, surreal rampage of vengeance.
Mandy remains 2018's best film. It's 120 minutes of pure arthouse cinema colliding with horror. Cosmatos expertly assembled a film that resembles a collaboration between John Carpenter, Rob Zombie, Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch and Sam Raimi. It's a descent into a phantasmagorical realm of bloody amazement and madness.
Cage is phenomenal, delivering the performance of his career. Roache transforms in his role as Sand. Riseborough conveys a million thoughts whilst saying little. #RichardBrake
(he's criminally under appreciated) and #BillDuke
own their small roles.
I still feel that 5 minutes could have been excised from the first 40 to tighten things up, but I understand why they weren't though.

Mandy is gritty for sure, but it's precise. You can see how deliberate every light/shadow, the varying amount of grain, and the use of colour is. Cosmatos' vision is stunning. It's represented well on disc, with only a few blown out highlights and a little banding keeping it from a perfect score. For want of an UHD release.
A movie of two parts when it comes to sound. With the exception of the tone-setting intro, the first half is reserved mostly for sporadic dialogue, atmospheric effects and the ethereal score. From the halfway point it becomes a sonic assault that matches insanity of the visuals. A flawless listen.
