“A man’s face is his autobiography, a woman’s face is her work of fiction.” — Oscar Wilde
Theres an unseen pressure on women to look, behave, be, think, speak, and even feel certain ways. So we wear masks of fiction.
It’s societal pressure. It’s the need for approval. It’s what we were taught. It’s the mold we must fit...So we wear masks.
We do it to ourselves and we do it to each other. Everyone’s casting stones whilst ducking the return fire in the worst game of adult dodgeball we could have ever created. We wear masks because it feels safer.
Why do we have to be so scared to be a disappointment to a spouse, friend, parent or employer? Why is that such an eminent possibility and fear? Why do we have to wear masks assuming they’ll make us look ‘right’ to others?
Why are we so surrounded by people who will think less of us just for showing an ounce of individuality, or being different, or doing things our own way? Why do we all don the same damn masks?
Sometimes it feels like we just exist by design to fill the needs of others but the truth is: we can’t please everyone and we’re not even THINKING about pleasing ourselves. Who should I please with the mask their preference? Do I want to wear a mask?
Try swapping the mask of WHAT EVERYONE ELSE WANTS for the bare face of truth. YOUR TRUTH.
Be too loud. Too introverted. Too muscular. Too thin. Too thick. Too brazen. Too shy. Too sensitive and too damn tough...If it’s you.... do that. And celebrate it. And welcome others to celebrate it too.
It makes your Instagram WAY LESS FUNNY than it was... say, hypothetically 3 years ago- but that’s the price you pay for the brave walk down a path of honesty and not caring what anyone says anymore.
You may well be on it entirely alone- but no masks will obscure your vision.
