My day 2 in Vienna shall go down in the history of my life as the day I discovered, the enigmatic #sisi
She was the empress of #austria
by marriage to #franzjoseph1
. Her childhood was carefree and unencumbered as she grew up with her siblings in #bavaria
. A sweet, happy child playing the harp and riding horses, she was betrothed to the emperor and came to #vienna
as a young 15 year old bride. Soon enough, her rose tinted glasses were lifted, and Sisi could not acclimate to her husband’s ideals, the court and kingdom’s strict rules of conduct and principles. She increasingly revolted against the strictures of court life, taking refuge in the cult of her beauty, obsessive dieting, a mania for fitness and her rapturous poetry. She stood by her ideals and principles, helping the underprivileged with whatever was in her might, with a can do spirit.
She had many children to fulfill her royal obligation of progeny, yet she was a #lostsoul
She wrote: “I am a seagull of no land, I call no shore my home, I stand alone as on a star”. The #suicide
of her son, #rudolph
plunged her into a deep depression after which she exclusively only wore black, started traveling extensively searching for #closure
She died just the way she wanted, without countless physician visits, without being a burden on her loved ones, quick and painless. What’s so utterly charming and enchanting about Sisi cannot be captured by a sculptors chisel nor an artist’s brush. She will live on not in history but in legend. Could relate to her pain, a queen with a compassionate heart hugely misunderstood and judged for her choices. She’s a kindred spirit to souls like me and a beacon of #hope
Tearing up, I sat by the window in her imperial chambers contemplating listening to the pitter patter of the rain outside until the guard kicked me out!
Ended the night catching a #surrealsunset
over the #danube
and bidding Vienna #aurevoir
from high above the #viennaeye
at the #prater
Onto the next adventure. Until then, Auf Weidersehen!
