🏅Here’s a double throwback to Go For Broke! Adina’s grandfather (Clarence Matsumura) was in the @gfbnec micro-exhibit and she was finally able to bring her grandma and mom to visit. This is the last weekend to see the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion at Go For Broke!
Our job here at GFBNEC becomes even more meaningful when families come in to see their relatives featured in our exhibitions. Even more special is when they bring in family heirlooms that are normally tucked away, like dog tags. Clarence Matsumura, who’s in one of the photos in our current micro exhibit “Fire for Effect,” left #HeartMountain
to serve in the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion and was also part of the liberation of a sub camp of Dachau. Thank you to Adina of @terasaki_budokan and @ltsc.cdc for bringing your family to see your grandfather. 🙏 #goforbroke #bluestarmuseums
It remains a little-known American story that in addition to being one of the most effective artillery units in the European Theater, the soldiers of the #522nd
Field Artillery Battalion were the ones who came across one of the sub-camps of Dachau, helping to save and liberate prisoners there, some who were as young as they were at the time. One survivor, Josef Elbs, was just 18. “On April 29, a big Oriental man saved my life. I was 18 years old, 76 pounds at the time, barely alive. He picked me up from the ground, inside the camp. His uniform had an emblem - blue, with a white hand and white torch. He was a young Asian man with the American army." 🇺🇸 Visit our temporary exhibit “Fire for Effect: Journey of the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion” through August 25!
