Libby’s baby boy, Destin, got sick when he was 3 days old. Antibiotics did the trick on the sickness, but he would no longer nurse. I spent the next weeks tube feeding him because he wouldn’t take a bottle, and he struggled to put on any weight. He spent the first 21 days of his life barely above his birth weight. He had to be given subcutaneous fluids almost as often as he was tube fed. He would do okay for a few days, gain an ounce or two, then struggle again. He went into a serious decline at 3 weeks old, seeming to struggle to breathe, though the x-ray at the vet showed his lungs were fine, but he had a lot of gas. I changed his formula, but he continued to decline. Finally, I discontinued feeding him as I had decided I was only prolonging his suffering, and I waited for him to die. Hourly I checked, but he hung on. After 24 hours of this, my husband came out of the nursery carrying him and saying “Look who’s all perky and feeling better!” Surprise! He seemed fine! I resumed his feedings and he improved...for a few days. He had bad days when I was sure he was going to die again, but then he would rally. An emotional roller coaster to say the least! I never photographed him with his siblings because I was never sure he would make it. However, after a month, he suddenly decided he was going to nurse again 😳😍! I was told he would never nurse after he had stopped! A miracle, for sure! He has been thriving over these last two weeks, so I have decided to share his story with you guys! This little guy is a fighter! He is an itty bitty peanut next to his siblings, but he keeps up with them in every way! He’s the sweetest, most precious little guy ever! He was the star of our photoshoot yesterday! (See my story for the video!) I love him like crazy cakes!
I have another blood test to run before he goes home, but it looks like he may be a tiny little rockstar puppy! He now proudly weighs in at a whopping 2 lbs 3 oz!
